I have been very slack in my posts, I think it has something to do with direction. I don't have much of that at the moment. Working on it though as I always have a plan :)

Things I would like to do in 2008/2009:

Paint a beautiful collection of peices that are fragile and ethereal.
Learn to surf (at least one lesson)

Do a kayaking trip

Read 2-3 books a month (currently on 1)

There are a few elements in these scenes that discuss the topics of vanity, decay and material desires. I plan to explore these issues in ways that sneak up on you.

My gift tag design

So I just recently turned 30, what a strange place to be in time. I remember being 20 and thinking that at 30 I would have my own little business empire and be married perhaps with child. Alas none of the above has materialised. Though I think it is important to note that as the years pass your goals change too. Things that are important to me now involve very little effort, time or money. So despite the low success rate on the project empire I am closer to were I ought to be. So thats ok with me.

This little trip into the reserve was fantastic, Darwin and I headed off into the wilderness with our trusty GPS ;). It was a wonderful day out, the feeling you get when you walk inbetween the trees that have been there for amost forever is quite intense. People throw the phrase "connecting with nature" around like crackers at christmas but in this instance there was a distinctive connection. I am eager to see how my artwork will develop with all these new influences.

Hello Everyone

Just a quick thanks to everyone who visited regularly waiting for an update and my apologies for not getting back sooner. Things have been somewhat hectic.

I am loving Australia!! I am loving the people, the food the lifestyle. I am especially loving living with my Dad. Yes , My Dad. He has genorously allowed my fiance' and myself to live with him until we are able to afford our own place. I know it sounds like it's too
close for comfort but I am loving it.
I treasure the conversations at meal time, the walks in the morning and having the opportunity to spoil him.

My UNI is great my fellow classmates are all ten years younger but thats alright with me and they don't seem to bothered about it either so happy days.

I have a mountain of work to do everyday and now on top of that I have to begin attempting to generate an income, my point being that my blogging will be irregular until I get a grip on time.
Also my camera is still in SA and I will only be able to show images at a later stage.

Again thank you for missing me :)

Well the time has come, I will be boarding my plane tomorrow morning and the adventure will officially begin.

My new life as written by me :)

I have packed my suitcase and I hope it's not overweight. I have my reading materials for the plane and will try get my hands on EAT PRAY LOVE which I believe is a life changing book. I am hoping for a good seat on the plane and if luck is on my side to have at least two free seats next to me. I hope for good in flight movies, more drama then action would be nice. I hope to sleep as much as possible. shooooo alot of hoping ;)

Yesterday was my farewell celebration, with just a few family and friends. I can't fully explain the feeling of being excited and terribly sad at the same time. I know have been blessed in my life because I have a wonderful family and good friends that have seen me through it all, the ups and the downs we have shared so much and they have stood by me ,to put an ocean between that is difficult, I love my mother and leaving her behind ,even if only for a while, is still just very painful.

But now I need look to the future have faith in my choices and embrace it's possibilities and all it has to offer.

Apologies for being so inconsistant on my blog, I have been a bit distracted by the Universe and it's secrets. I have had such a thirst for knowledge in the last few months and I have been reading like a librarian on crack. I just can't get enough. There is so much that we assume we know only to find out that we know nothing.

Feeling a little like someone who has not been paying attention in class I needed to catch up. So a book entitled "A short History of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson seemed to be the perfect place to start.

I am riveted. Which is so strange for a person with a creative overflow and scientic no flow :)

I highly recommend it for getting a good perspective on life from a biological point of view and helping you understand humanities place in the universe. He writes in an as lamen terms as one can get when discussing the make up of all things but perfectly comprehensible.

Thought I would do a random Friday of just images I like really because isn't that what these blogs are about?? Inspiration!

Stumbled upon this US designer, Kate Jackson, her work is beautifully layered and manages to grasp a deep sense of the client. Her work, for the most part, does not look perfectly manicured to be almost unliveable but rather fits into the needs of the people living inside the home.

I think that people tend to focus on their own life times to much, their own personal achievements. As any motivational speaker will tell you, set goals you know in your mind are achievable. The problem with this motivation is that people will always limit their goals to their life time, their abilities and in most cases only span over the next 10 years.

Be a part of something bigger, be apart of cultivating a legacy that people you will never meet and may not even know your name will have the pleasure of enjoying.

Look to your daily life or career and start something wonderful however simple however grand, something positive and uplifting to hand to 10 generations into the future.

BNO DESIGN

It's been a wonderful week from moment to moment. My gratitude list has grown exponentially and with frequent Power cuts in our country silence & candle light encourage more reading and writing. I am working on new list considering that I may be leaving for Sunny Australia in a few weeks time I have made a list of things I would like to do in South Africa before I go and the really interesting thing it's all people not place related so it just goes to show home is where the heart is.

Today has been such a pleasure, the interesting part is that it's been a fairly uneventful day but when you look at it from a new perspective everything is just so damn special. I have started the good old Grateful List thing, I now do it every morning while I am sipping my wake up coffee watching the birds go into a frenzy of the crumb spread I had laid out and then again at the end of the day while I am tucked up in bed. You realise how many wonderful things happen to you on a daily basis from moment to moment.

Since I am feeling so warm and fuzzy I thought a pastel posting is in order!

Apologies for not updating since Thursday but I was distracted my the meaning of life. Yes that old chestnut...
I have been meaning to read "The Monk that sold his Ferrari" for quite some time as for the past four years it has been popping into my world. I went into a quaint little bookstore searching for another book when my eyes locked on to it. I have been delving into it ever since.
What a beautiful concept and way to live. If you are questioning your insatiable appetite for more things, more money more everything this book guides you to a point of contentment to stop the urge for more and just be.

The most important tip I will give you is to open your mind. I have a Christian friend who said "oooh Monks I don't like Monks it's not about Monks is it???'' don't let the title get in the way just focus on the very valid, very practical and very effective methods that will help you come to your own conclusions.

One of the main points is to that one should follow their passion and ensure that it in some way serves others, I believe this is the key to happiness.

'Shirley Valentine' is one of my favourite movies, the story of a woman finding her independence and herself. It was that movie that sparked the love affair I have with Greece still to this day.
Living in Greece for a while in 2001 was one of the best experiences of my life. With a scenery that one could only describe as Ethereal, a giant Snow Globe of the Gods. I stayed in a quiet village of Paleros in the Southern Ionian which helped me live the Greek life as opposed to the tourist traps that keep the authenticity at arms length. It was a wonderful time in my life and Greece will now and forever have a special place in my heart

Their homes are placed in such a magnificent setting that there is no need for excess. I love the simplicity.

I was going through my list of daily reads when I came across Decorate it Darlings' post on her conflicting thoughts on decor, consumerism and what it all means.

A thought process I think most decor & design lovers would have experienced at one point or another. I myself posted about the soul of interior design in order to settle the conflict within. Patrica Gray has listed her new years resolutions and her sense of responsibility to the contribution she makes to the world around her and I sense that feeling throughout the creative industry.

I feel that everybody is ready for a movement, a shift in thoughts when it comes to design.

I quickly drafted a design Mantra I would love it if all design bloggers added and improved on it until we created a BASIC LAWS OF DESIGN FOR A NEW ERA. A soulful approach to design that so many of us have intended by so few of us have done!

1. Look to what you have rather then looking for new

2. REUSE, RECYCLE ,REUSE, RECYCLE!!!!

3. A home is not a showroom it's a sanctuary that celebrates the lives of those who live in it.

Burnt Orange is a colour staple in South Africa, we seem to favour warm colours over cool colours here, which is a bit odd considering the weather in the Southern Hemisphere. You will almost always find deep red or a burnt orange in a South African Home.

The day after...

Christmas was Christmas, alot of food and alot of people is how I would describe it. The highlight was watching the children playing in the swimming pool. They really are just little miracles ready to teach their parents a lesson at every opportunity, for them life stands still and they are in the moment living it from one to the next.

With this in mind I am setting my sights on life in 2008 as one expects at this time, this past year I feel like I have been sittin in a waiting room, I stopped challenging myself and I tried to close myself off from the world. I really want that to change this coming year. I want to experience as many positive new things as I can handle. I want to be a contributing factor to the growth of more peoples lives I want to give more and even receive more. Life is about participation and observation but I am now ready to participate I have observed for too long!

Entertaining guests will of course be the focal point of many homes around the world over the next few days. So it seemed only fitting to look at a few dining room interiors.

I think the key word in dining rooms is entertaining. It's the one room in the house where one can be dramatic and anything goes. Let your imagination run wild.

To achieve these table scape's look around your house for items & objects that you don't normally associate with your dining room, colours that are striking, shapes that are interesting. Try bringing a bit of the outside in or the inside outside for a whole new experience.

Quick Wedding Update

The courtyard decked out for the ceremony, they later added roses to the back of each chair.

The happy couple, the groom wore a white suit and pink floral shirt which suited his vivacious personality perfectly.

A saxophonist played for the guests while the couple had all their photographs taken, it was a beautiful touch to this wonderful occasion.

The Quarters Hotel in Durban hosted the reception and helped us with laying out the selection of table decor, opting to keep everything fresh and simple. The staff & food are outstanding at this venue.

Apologies for the blogging delay, the wedding took alot out of me, it was a beautiful beautiful day. It was small intimate wedding which in my opinion is the only way to go. The food was to die for and there was love all around. I thought I only had two glasses of wine but the throbbing head I woke up the next morning was most certainly the work of a few more. The bride looked gorgeous in an unusual but stunning Pink number that suited her to the T. It was designed for her by Terrance Bray (of whom dresses the Prince on Monaco's girlfriend)

Today I will be attending my dearest friend Liesls' wedding to Wade. I was there when they met and I have been fortunate enough to be a small part of their lives ever since. I know this seems to be developing into a bit of a travel blog at the moment but one must indulge if one so desires :) I have a burning desire to stay at this little spot, it seems to have all the ingredients that make up an unforgettable experience. It's the kind of place I could sneak off on my own for a few months to write a novel or at least pretend to write a novel :)

In our deepest darkest bush we have some of the most spectacular luxury experiences in the world. Since I live here I don't dream of hiding out in the bush with my binocs looking for wild creatures, my taste longs for a much more tropical orientated experience where the only thing wild is my cocktail dress :)

I love pugs, my moms recently passed away so this is in memory of little Tinkerbell

This was the first panel of five paintings for a project I did at Lodge. Each panel is 1200mm so the impact in the space was amazing, no full images available :(

I think this unit from Skona Hem is so interesting, I enjoy taking pieces that have some history and placing them in very modern interiors. They are like bookmarks in time.

This storm recently visited my Durban Town, I have never seen anything like it I was standing in the lounge watching this grey mass rolling towards me at great speed like wild white horses, just behind them in the bulbous cloud where patches of petrol blue that reminded me of a science fiction movie. Everyone in the streets was looking up to the heavens in amazement. I have to say I was shaking in my boots. It turned out to be the tail end of storm that devastated some homes further in land. It's moments like these that make you realise how insignificant you really are and how thankful you are for people like Al Gore.

Aside from the drama of it all I thought the colours where gob smacking...trust a designer :)

Images from the Hotel Petit Moulin in Paris, rooms were designed by Lacroix so as you can imagine they are quite unusual. The images selected here are probably the most tame of the lot.

The power of Red strikes again, bit if a mixed bag post as I am sure you've noticed I find many images inspiration for both my art & interior style.

Navy often associated with yatching and white stripes is actually a very versatile colour. In the images above I have paired it with ochre/yellow/gold. It's not a common combination I think because both colours are so bold but I would imagine that artists would appreciate their power. I like to pop a little red in the mix just to pack a little more punch".

Is it possible for me to live in a Black & White home, probably not, I LOVE COLOUR too much. :)

If you are after a sophisticated interior that oozes refined taste, try the Black & White "colour " scheme. The trick to it is in warming up Black & White, this is done by introducing natural wood elements and natural fabrics. Hotel Room Twist

This is the answer to my prayers, my fiance' likes to camp and well can't say I feel the same way so my plan is that I get one of these TravelPods, which can be set up anywhere they are required complete with bathroom, air con and TV ;). He can pitch his tent just outside and we will both be happy. Unfortunately these are still in testing so cross your fingers.

Hotel rooms are often be disappointing in their creativity but these are surely not. If you are after a complete experience try Fox Hotel . 60 Rooms and 21 Artists went to town on these rooms. Similarly the hotel Daddy Long Legs in Cape Town provides a similar experience at affordable rates. Being a luxury girl I can't say I will be booking in anytime soon but I do enjoy people daring to be different.

The the other day was D and my 4th year anniversary so he took me to a restaurant up the coast in a private living estate called UMAMI. The decor was fresh, clean and modern and I just loved the location, surrounded by trees and green hills (would have taken photo's but camera batteries are dead :(

I choked a little when I saw the prices it was by far the most expensive meal I had ever had. We were optimistic though and looked forward to a culinary delight...well not only where they tiny portions but the food was ok and I would even go as far to say bland!!!
The experience was mediocre I just think if you are charging by the left arm you should make your guests feel like royalty ??? Especially since there were only two tables seated ??
We came away feeling a little like the emperor with no clothes. To cheer me up I have been collecting restaurant images...hey it works for me.

We are going attempt a retake and go to Durban's best restaurant (and has been for years) 9Th Avenue Bistro. Will let you know how it goes.

Its what I call Nordic Country, I love the cosy but fresh aspect of it all, I am currently assisting a client with transforming her salmon pink walled and wood paneled ceiling living area into something along the lines of the above.

The key to this look is linen, shades of white & grey, natural wood, white wash, leather, raw ceramics. To add glamour add silver, glass & crystal decorative items.

It is the season so I had to do my Christmas bit!!! After popping in to http://cocokelley.blogspot.com/ I decided to also look into Eco wrapping because I simply can't bare the thought of all the trash that collects once the excitement of ripping open the gift wrap subsides! So I am pleased to say that I found a surprising number of sites that offer the Eco gift alternative I especially liked http://www.eco-artware.com/ they have products and great ideas. Also liked http://luckycrow.com/ and a clever product site called http://www.reusablebags.com/

I plan to hire a local seamstress, who uses the income to support her family, to make three different sized fabric gift bags out of the scrap fabric that I have piled up at the back of my closet. The idea being that the fabric bag can then be re-used to put shoes, laundry, underwear in.

If I calculate the cost of buying the paper, tags and ribbon this is cheaper too! :)

It's funny how life works, there is a good chance that I will be moving to Brisbane Australia to study a Degree in Design in Feb 2008, however I have the sudden urge to organise my home office, pointless considering it's use will be shortlived.

I remember as a child nothing was more thrilling then receiving a box of Crayola crayons, I still remember the smell as you broke the cardboard seal, the sight of every colour imaginable all neat and in perfect rows. mmmm....

I collected a few images that would inspire me on a daily basis to create beautiful things & thoughts and in a small way take me back to my Crayola Box.

I worked with a decorator by the name of Caron Mitchell in August this year, this time I was merely one of the artists. I was very impressed with the warmth and character of the room considering it is a hotel.

Here are the photographs from the before & after photo shoot. I did not get as many good images as I thought I did, lesson learned is take way more then you need!! Just one more excuse the light was quite intense it was early afternoon ...OK that's all I got...hope you like my work :)

It involved some heavy lifting where I managed to have my knee collapse underneath me while moving a TV unit up a flight of stairs. All I kept thinking was not matter what don't drop the unit! What dedication!!

We painted the wall behind the server which made an instant impact for the room, added a large sea grass rug to frame the couches, changed TV units (although they collected the wrong unit supposed to be similar colour to the coffee table) Added orange silk cushions to lift all the neutrals and of course rearranged the furniture positioning. The changes where minimal but very necessary and made such a difference. The client is adding some floating shelves for the wall behind the TV unit at the moment it's bare :(

As an artist I have been know to have a deep thought every so often but the one that keeps running circles in my mind is the concept of community vs capitalism. I believe that the two can work hand in hand. As a business owner I know that you world you but off to bring home the bacon so people are reluctant to share the bacon, opting to rather stash it away for a raining day. However this results in a "me for myself" mentality in which case you better stash your bacon because no body is going to look out for you.

Imagine a world where you grow up your goal not be the richest kid on the block but to be a contributor to the well being of those around you.

Where every company that makes a product places a higher value of social responsibilty than on profit. Where every product that is produced is produced to serve a cause. Where Capitalism feeds the world and not the few.

I have a thing for ceramics, there is something so basic and instinctual in the feeling you get when you hold a vessel in your hands, or the way you cradle your coffee mug on a cold day. I am always on the look out for artists expressing this ceramic connection in a different way. Again I favour the hand made over the mass produced for a bit of soul but the sight of a table covered in different shapes & sizes of bowls does make my heart skip a beat, mass produced or not.

I have been working on these paintings which combine my love of painting with my love of beads of glorious beads. I intend to work on my technique until the piece looks like a beaded tapestry. The origins of this technique are very primitive, aboriginal design, african drum painting and I am sure dates back to the the cave man. When I do it I have a profound sense of peace. Hope they uplift you.

Just look at the colour combo here, the shading so striking! The rest of the bird is a combination of grey and white.

This bird, whos' name I should have jotted down but since I have never been one for facts I didn't. Doesnt it look like something out of Jurassic Park?

The colour of this bird is just amazing it's like some one whipped out their Copic Marker and had a blast.

We went for a visit at our local Durban Riverside Birdpark the other day. If you are ever suffering from a creative block this is the answer. The colour combinations are just mind blowing. These were the only birds that stood still long enough for a "decent" photo.

This is one of the many floral earthenware masterpieces Astrid Dahl has created, her work is breathtakingly fragile and elegant.

These fine crafted silver orchids have been created by Nic Bladen who works in a studio in South Africa that looks more like a botanists workshed then a jewellery workshop.

Mielie Bags as the name suggests have the most delightful bumpy texture created by the method in which they make the bags.

This perspex bracelet was created by the well known young designer Phillipa Green.

Made this figurine from clay & wire , then went over it with woodstain, wiped off the excess to get an aged look. I used self drying clay, no firing required.

I had this frame made by a 'Hawker' (a street vendor) named Lucky (HA HA) He did it so well I ordered ten, placed a deposit and never heard from him again! Such a pity for me and for him.

This area of the shop was actually housed in what used to be a restaurant kitchen

I snapped this pic while D was racing in a mountain bike marathon, it was such a contrast all the bright coloured equipent and promotional gear. Then you look up and there is this moment of peace. Ok so it may look a little "sunset on a beach" but I really like it.
